Is Polypropylene Jumbo Bag Resistant to Chemicals and Acids?

Polypropylene resists most common chemicals, but that resistance isn't absolute — it depends on exactly which substance, at what concentration and temperature.

Polypropylene is inherently resistant to a wide range of common chemicals — including most acids, bases (alkalis), salts, and many solvents at room temperature; this is one of the main reasons it's chosen for industrial packaging of mining and chemical products. But this resistance isn't absolute, and "polypropylene is resistant" alone isn't enough — what matters is exactly which substance, and under what conditions.

Known weak points: strong, concentrated oxidizing acids (such as concentrated nitric acid or concentrated sulfuric acid at high temperature) can gradually damage polypropylene. Certain aromatic solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons can also cause the fabric to swell or soften, even without fully "dissolving" it. Temperature is also an important factor — a substance that's completely safe at room temperature may reduce the material's resistance at higher temperatures.

A practical point: polypropylene's chemical resistance is usually documented in standard industrial chemical resistance charts, based on the substance, concentration, and temperature. Before ordering a jumbo bag for a specific chemical product, it's best to state exactly these three things to the factory — the exact substance name, concentration, and contact temperature — rather than just saying "it's a chemical."

For substances that are genuinely corrosive or high-risk, relying solely on the fabric's inherent resistance isn't enough — as discussed in an earlier post about inner liners, adding a suitable inner layer can provide extra, more reliable protection. For chemical and mining products, Arian Baft Partow recommends the most suitable combination of fabric, coating, and liner based on the exact material specifications the customer provides.
