Antistatic Classification of Jumbo Bags (Type A-D): What It Means and When You Need It

Many buyers working with flammable materials, organic solvents, or explosive dust (such as metal powders, flour, or certain chemicals) assume that any polypropylene jumbo bag is inherently safe for their use. In reality, the electrostatic behavior of the fabric varies significantly between bag types, and the international standard IEC 61340-4-4 classifies jumbo bags into four types (Type A through D) specifically to address this.

Type A is the simplest — standard polypropylene fabric with no specific protection against electrostatic discharge, suitable only for non-flammable materials. Type B fabric has controlled electrical resistance that prevents high-energy spark discharge, but is still not sufficient for explosive atmospheres. Type C is made from interconnected conductive threads that must be grounded during filling and discharging — failing to ground it is itself a hazard. Type D has inherent spark-resistant properties and is suitable for higher-risk areas even without grounding.
